“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1

Before being born again we had an earthly perspective. Some of us may have pursued wealth or fame or popularity. Some of us may have decided to just have a fun filled life. A life of pleasure attending parties and when possible just relaxing. Most unbelievers think that since life is short, they must do anything they can whilst they are able, for they think that there is nothing after this life is over.

However, Christians have a different perspective. They know that the things of this world are passing away. Therefore, their focus is toward heaven. They change their priorities to reflect what is really important, and live fully aware that what this world offers is intended to distract them from having a meaningful relationship with God. Loving this world is evidence of a lack of love for God. Our greatest desire should be drawing nearer to God every day and in every way possible. Bible study, meditating on God’s word, prayer and witnessing are helpful ways to draw near to Him. Paul encourages us to set our minds on things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Christ’s position in heaven is one of authority. He is sovereign and presently preparing a place for us.

In the meantime, we are to be serving Him and one another. We are to be doing good works because that is the way to prove our faith in Him. Without good works our faith is dead. We have only this life to please our heavenly Father. We are told in the scriptures that we were created for His good pleasure. His son Christ Jesus died to free us to become the type of people that God intended for us to be. May He mold us into His Son’s image. We can pray and ask God to help us not resist His will and grant us the capacity to willfully and joyfully obey Him. Obedience is key to growth into Christlikeness.

Heaven is a place where we will know and have fellowship with each other. The earthly relationships will cease. It is a place where we will have responsibilities.

You see this is our time to be prepared for service to God by serving one another. Remember the parable of the talents? What talents are we allowing the Holy Spirit to develop in us for eternity?
